It can be hard to find good horse books. There are way too many that get a lot wrong! If you want good, accurate horse books, this list is for you.
- In the Heart of a Mustang by M. J. Evans
I really liked this book, and have read it a couple of times. It’s about a boy who, being sent to a camp for stealing, bonds with and trains a mustang mare. Unlike most horse movies, however, it’s realistic and not cheesy. This book was great!
- Misty of Chincoteague and its sequels by Marguerite Henry
This series is really enjoyable, and each book can stand on its own as well as in a series! They all focus on Chincoteague ponies, and I definitely recommend them!
- The Phantom Stallion: Wild Horse Island series by Terri Farley
This series is a sequel series of sorts to the Phantom Stallion series, focusing on a different character that, if I recall correctly, isn’t introduced in the original series. However, familiar characters do pop up here and there! This series is set in Hawaii, and I really liked it. I don’t think I’ve read the last book, but it’s a really good series!
- The Whinnies on the Wind series by Angela Dorsey
I absolutely loved these books, and have read most of them over and over! It’s about a girl who can communicate with horses in her mind, but everything involving horses is still very realistic. This series was very enjoyable, and I highly recommend it!
- The High Hurdles series by Lauraine Snelling
These books focus on showjumping, and I loved them! There are ten books, but they come in two volumes, each with five books. The main character really goes through a great character arc! I highly recommend these.
- The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley
When I last counted my Black Stallion books, there were twenty-three (there is one I don’t have, though)! These are truly great books that are accurate the whole way. It focuses mostly on horse racing, but the Black and Alec go on some wild adventures! As a tip, there are some Black Stallion books that were written after Walter Farley’s death by his son, Steven Farley. Stay away from those, they got kind of weird. I recommend all the books written by Walter Farley though!
- The Heartland Series by Lauren Brooke
Some of you have probably heard of, or seen, the Heartland TV series, but did you know that it was actually based off of a twenty-book series (with a few little bonus books)? They changed it a lot (specifically Ty, he’s very different and, in my opinion, much better in the books. Though, at the time of writing this, I’ve only seen around half of season one). This book series is awesome, and I hope you like them if you read them!
- The Chestnut Hill series by Lauren Brooke
This was a series about a horse-focused boarding school, and I’ve enjoyed reading and rereading them! There are four main characters, and each book focuses on a different one of them. There are twelve books, so they each have three, but the other characters are still very prominent through them all.
- The Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley
This series is one of the only horse things – books, movies, games, anything like that – that actually has/focuses on western riding. It’s centered in the west and has mustangs front and center! I was so excited to finally read a series that had western riding, and it was really, really good, so I hope you enjoy this too if you read it!
- A Horse of Her Own by Annie Wedekind
This book is wonderful! I spotlighted it in a recent email and plan to do a review of it, so I won’t go too in-depth here.
I highly recommend all of these books, and I loved them all myself! I hope you found something you haven’t read before, and if you have any that you really like, feel free to let me know in the comments!
Thanks for recommending all these books, they sound great!! The Phantom Stallion series sounds like something I need to read😁
